We're going to a birthday party today for one of Lily's little friends. Her mom is totally into Elvis. This is the first dress I did with the belt, I am so happy with how it came out. I've gotta make Lily one ASAP.

ETA: Robert's mad that I'm giving this as a gift because he thinks I should sell the dress for $75. Believe it or not, it would sell for that in the stores around here, but I'd never have the balls to sell it for that kind of price. Plus this woman invited both my kids to the party, which was really nice of her. Need to justify anyone?

Oh, wow. That is really terrific. When you make that kind of thing for sale, how much do you charge? And is your website running?

[identity profile] lalicopa.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Website's still not up, but Bean's working on it and promises me that within a month it will be up and running.

The price tag says $40 on the dresses...but ya know, LJ pals get a discount.

A friend of mine is having a baby girl in July, and her older daughter is turning 3 then. I was just thinking that getting matching (or coordinating) dresses as a birthday/Birth day gift might be fun :-)

[identity profile] junipertree.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! And I should add that the new baby will be named Lily :-)

What a good choice of a name!

I love making matching dresses for kids. It's soooooo cute.

Cool. After the weekend, let's chat by email?

Have you considered Hyena Cart? I think it might make sense for you.

[identity profile] lalicopa.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ya know, I actually tried Hyena cart once and the outfit didn't sell, so I quickly gave up, as is my style.

Maybe I'll give it another go.

that is amazing. i love it!!

That is adorable! What a fabulous gift!

I'm not all that into Elvis and DANG, I want that for Ben! Oh, wait...

Robert needs to chill the hell out. Did you used to make (and enjoy making) gifts for friends and their kids before you opened Cute Threads? Why should that change just because you have a business doing it? All work and no fun make you not want to work.

[identity profile] freshgroundfemm.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
that is an awesome dress!

[identity profile] kris1225.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
very cute. you should do a trade show.

[identity profile] lalicopa.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ya think?!?!? But I make everything myself, so I think I'd be screwed either way. Like I'd make a ton of stuff and nothing would sell or I'd make the right amount and then get swamped with orders and no way to fill them.

How did you make the shift?

[identity profile] kris1225.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
started with a local home sewer who learned to sew by order. mike did all the cutting. then we started cutting extra for her to build up inventory. then switched to all in-stock. then switched to factory cutting and sewing.

but there are tons of apparel manuf. that don't make until the orders come in. but obviously you'd have to have the infrastructure to handle that.

what city are you in? how many styles do you have?

[identity profile] lalicopa.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in Merrick, NY...I have tons of styles because I just make all different stuff. I think that's part of my problem. I have about 100 different fabric patterns and I use them on all different kinds of tie dyes, so it's a little tricky. Plus I use them for different things, appliques, skirts, blankets, etc. And I'm always buying more fabric on eBay (gotta stop doing that!)

[identity profile] kris1225.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
well, you could dye lots of fabric and then have it cut and sewn? you can make very limited runs of some styles (which could in turn drive up the value). you could definitely get $75 for that dress. we went to a boutique when we were in LA that had all kinds of funky and unique kids' clothes for very high prices.

Enjoy the party!

That is freaking adorable. Thankfully I'm neither an Elvis fan nor a mother of girls, so I can withstand the temptation to drool (overmuch.) But I wanted to echo again (since a couple of posts back you seem to doubt this fact which is obvious to the rest of us) that you are amazingly talented.

I've actually been inspired to make my first set of pants! They look terrible, but the process amused me (and amused my dad who donated his old jeans to the project.) Perhaps I'll even feel up to tackling Halloween costumes again this year. (I "assembled" with minimal sewing some costumes two years ago with halfway decent results, in fact I probably sent you that card. But since then I've been afeared of the machine. Now I'm trying to psych myself up by searching for sewing tables, on the assumption that if the machine has a home, it might get used more often.)

That is so cute!!! $75 easy. I think your stuff is all in that price range, or higher. Set your prices higher than you think everyone will pay. You'll be surprised.

Your hubby needs to chill. Maybe you should explain to him the free advertising you can get by giving friends 'free samples'?

[identity profile] joy-disaster.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What a fantastic dress! A Lilo and Stitch fan would go nuts for this too!

[identity profile] tellinellen.livejournal.com 2006-05-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
jen that is fucking fabulous. of course you should give it as a gift but then you should make more to sell. you have got to make some connections at boutiques, because you could really rake it in, imo.

Holy Christ!! 21 comments??

First off, I don't think you could sell this in a store, because you use the likeness of Elvis Presley, which I;m sure his estate owns and leases out only at very steep price points.

Second-- Layne so totally wants one of these dresses! Its easily worth $75.

Actually I could sell it in a store, since I purchased the fabric in a chain, which is licensed to print it...
