Monday is Gymboree day for Lily and my mother usually spends that time with Laszlo. They walk through the strip mall where Gymboree is and have their Monday morning bagel and go to Party City to "buy crap" - which he repeats freely now. My mom was away for the weekend and wasn't going to make it back until way after Gymboree, and I didn't want Lily to miss a class, so I asked my friend Sheryl to watch Laszlo while we went. Sheryl is the mom of Laszlo's best pal Ethan, and we are at her house a lot and she's here a lot as well. I haven't left Laszlo anywhere that I can remember, so it was a test, although I was quite sure he'd be ok and if not, I was positive that Sheryl could handle it.
I called after Gymboree ended, so he had been there for an hour without me. He was totally fine. She told me to go have lunch if I wanted, so I did. I went for lunch with a new friend from Lily's class. So by the time I got back to Sheryl's house, Laszlo had been there 2 1/2 hours, 2 of those without me. I pulled into the driveway and Sheryl's kids came running out to see me - Laszlo stayed in the backyard and all I heard was his belly laugh coming from out there. He didn't even care when I walked in and said hello. I was *so* happy that he was such a good boy. I mean, I don't expect he'd be that good at a stranger's house, but still...he was just such a good well-adjusted boy who knew his momma was coming back for him and who didn't care. He had a blast.
Sheryl asked if it was bittersweet for me that Laszlo wasn't missing me. Nope. Not. At. All. It's totally sweet, 100%. I waited 3 1/2 years to be able to have the confidence to leave him knowing that he'd be ok without me, feeling that he would not have a total meltdown.
I owe a lot of this to his therapy, some of it to just plain time and also a lot of it to Sheryl, who has always made Laszlo feel part of her family.
I'm just so happy, I'm beaming.
