Laszloisms
Nov. 14th, 2006 11:04 pmIt's really scary to realize that your 4 1/2 year old is smarter than you. Especially when you consider yourself relatively intelligent.
Laszlo's been testing like crazy. I know there are a lot of changes around here lately, and only more to come in the near future...but still. I'm at my wit's end some days.
The other night, he refused to stay in his bed. It was late. I was so tired. The kids had both been up and sick for days, but were finally feeling better (thank goodness). Laszlo kept coming out of his room. You may recall he sleeps with his two frog stuffed animals, which he has had since he was a newborn. He *needs* them to sleep. He freaks out if one falls down. He freaks out if he can't find them when he's playing in the house. They have names and personalities and voices. Just trying to stress how very important they are to him.
I went into my Dr. Phil mode to "find his currency" to keep him in his room. I told him that if he came out again, I was going to take one of his frogs away and if he came out again, I'd take the other away, and he could not have them back until morning.
Satisfied, I fell asleep. Not five minutes later, he walked in again, "Mommy!" I said, "Ok, which froggy do you want me to take?" "The little one," and the little prick just handed me his frog and went back into his room. I thought for sure he'd be flipping, but nope.
I fell back asleep and not ten minutes later, he came in again (this is after midnight) and said, "Mommy! I want you to take away my other froggy."
Apparently, Laszlo HAS NO CURRENCY. When I tell him to go in his room when he's being horrible to Lily, he says, "Good, I WANT to go in my room," and walks himself upstairs for a few minutes until he calms down. Sometimes that works, but usually he just comes back and is awful again.
On a nicer Laszlo note...we were in the car the other night with my mom, Robert and Lily. Laszlo said, "Mommy, I want to give you one of MY seeds to give you a baby." He doesn't know about sex, but he knows that Daddy gave Mommy a special seed that grows into a baby, but it's not like a vegetable seed. He understands as much as a 4 1/2 year old can.
Also, last week Laszlo was telling us about a dream he had when he was little. He said, "When I were little, I was in my crib. I was scared, so I tried to climb out and then gravity made me fall to the floor and I cried a lot because I got hurt." He never climbed out of his crib or fell out of it. And he's been out of his crib for well over a year. He's been making up a lot of stories lately. But he totally *gets* what gravity is, he uses it in context all the time when something falls or rolls down the driveway, etc.
This kid is just so fucking smart in so many ways and I find it so frustrating when he won't listen and even more when he hurts Lily. I mean, he's pretty much reading...he can add two 2-digit numbers (but no carrying anything...so like 23 + 34 but not 23 + 38). We're all scared for kindergarten because apparently they just go over the alphabet and numbers again, and I don't think there's really any enrichment in the public schools for his age.
Guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Robert was talking about pushing Laszlo ahead since he's older than most of the kids (being born in early February, the cutoff is January 1 for the grade) - but socially he's not at all ready. He's still quite the social retard.
