Laszlo had his second piano lesson, his first on his new piano. My mom got him a piano/keyboard, sort of a hybrid between - so it has touch sensitivity but it has perfect tone all the time like a keyboard. It's awesome. And it is a full size, so he can use it for years.
Anyway...
The piano teacher Matthew and I were talking after Laszlo's lesson yesterday. Laszlo wanted to play Matthew a song he made up, and he plays up the scale to find the note to start on, he listens for it. So I mentioned that was what he was doing. He said, "Yeah, I am pretty sure he plays by ear." I asked if that would be a problem with the formal learning. He said, "No way, it's a gift. You can teach theory, but you can't teach someone to play by ear."
So...
Today my mom was over and they were playing around on the piano. My mom asked Laszlo what a certain note she was playing was, while he was looking at the keyboard. He didn't answer. Then she plinked it and he shouted out, "C!" She tried it with a few others, and he got them all right. Then she had him shut his eyes while she did it and he got all those right too, and in different octaves.
I was just speechless. I don't even know what to say in these situations where he does something extraordinary. I honestly don't think he'll ever stop amazing me.
