Yet another cool Freecycle experience
Nov. 22nd, 2004 11:01 pmI had a bag of organic cotton disposable nursing pads with 19 of the original 30 left in the bag. It was sitting in my bra drawer for months now (I stop leaking after about 3 months) and I finally decided yesterday to post it on Freecycle. I got 2 response. The first turned out to be a doula who lives 2 towns away from me. She said that many of her clients breastfeed and that they would go to good use. She was the first responder, so I gave them to her. The other woman is nursing her second child (15 months) and lives near the town I grew up in, about 20 minutes from here. She wrote back that she's starting a La Leche League group for our area! I'm so excited. This is just what I have been looking for, since I've become so disillusioned with all the formula feeders I've been coming into contact with.
Today at Gymboree one of our new friends announced that she's pregnant. She was talking about bottles, etc...so I said, "Why don't you just breastfeed? Then you won't have to worry." She gave me the whole, "But I tried with my son and didn't have enough milk." I tried to bite my tongue. I really did. But I just can't help it anymore. "You had enough milk. The reason the baby is sucking every 2 hours is to build up your supply. Lily only nurses 4-6 times a day now and it's so easy. No bottles to sterilize. It's free." She just shook her head and said, "I just can't do it." Man oh man. What is UP with people around here?!?! And this woman seems to want the best for her son. Why would she just ignore what I was saying? Then she actually said, "Yeah, breastfed babies are always healthier. You can always tell a breastfed baby." WTF?!?!?
Ok, I'm going off again. I just can't take it. It makes NO sense to me. I feel like just walking around with a tit out and have Lily hanging off of it all day long. I wish there was something I could do without becoming a total outcast. I don't want to be known as "that crazy breastfeeding lady" who just moved into the neighborhood...but this issue is so dear to me and it's making me so crazy.
I started this out as a nice experience entry and here I am ranting away. ARGH.
