A bit stressed
Dec. 28th, 2004 03:49 pmRobert gets paid in 2 ways...he gets a salary on the 15th and 30th of every month, and then there's "The Christmas Bonus" which is usually at least 1.5 times his salary. We live on the salary and save most of the bonus. This year the savings are all gone because we bought the house. So...we're waiting and waiting. The bonus isn't actually given until after the first of the year, I guess for tax purposes - although there are meetings with the bosses where they tell the employees what they are going to get within a week of actual distribution.
The company was doing really well, but were hit with a whopping fine that may impact the bonuses all around. The junior guys all got their bonuses last week and were all disappointed.
We've acquired some debt with the new house, 2 babies, etc...and I was really hoping that we'd be able to stretch out those savings until the bonus comes...but as of 5 minutes ago when I finished paying the bills, our checking account is just about at zero.
My dad used to say that you should never be upset with a holiday bonus because it wasn't ever *required* of the employer to give...but with Wall Street firms, it's standard. I'm just worried that it will be a lot less than we *need* it to be, in which case I'm not quite sure what we'll do. I spent a lot of money starting up my lil business, and there is really no business. I've gotten a few orders from friends, but really nothing else. I submitted the link to Google, went to a local craft boutique thing, sent the link to some other appropriate sites, posted it everywhere else I frequent on the Web - and NOTHING. I guess I'm a bit stressed about that too, since we put a lot of money into it and I really thought it would have taken off at least a little by now.
I didn't expect to make a lot of money that way, the real issue here is the bonus...and I guess I'm just feeling kinda guilty that I spent all that money that we could have been using now as a little cushion.
Lastly, Robert will be *impossible* to live with if his bonus is bad. Aside from the obvious financial implications, he will take it as a personal insult from his employers and will be very upset that he hasn't found another job sooner. The market always sucks this time of year because people tend to leave soon after they receive their bonuses. Robert is at a disadvantage (at least that's what he tells me) because he didn't get into this field until he was almost 40, and there are "kids" that get the jobs he would want. He did his career backwards...he started out as a college professor with so much free time, and now he has to be in the office at 7:30 am five days a week and doesn't get home until after 6. I didn't meet him until he was at his transition job, which was a regular 9-5 but close to home. He's making a lot more money in the city, but this bonus thing is always such a stressful thing every year for months before and especially this week.
That's all, just had to bitch a little about it since I am stressed and I don't want to complain to Robert about it because he'll feel terrible. Thanks for reading.
