Cute Threads Stuff
Dec. 1st, 2005 12:30 amI brought 2 pairs of overalls to a local woman who went crazy over a pair of Lily's and asked that I make them for her daughters. She has triplets, 2 girls and a boy. As it turns out, this woman knows the other woman from Gymboree who is hosting a house party on Friday night for my stuff. Seems this is going to be QUITE the event.
I called the woman with the overalls today to tell her they were ready and find out when I could bring them to her. She asked how much they were (after they were all done, like it wouldn't have mattered) and I told her, "$75 a pair." She said, "Ok, you got it." Like it was nothing.
When I got to her house, I realized why she didn't flinch. We're talking big money. Like possibly crazy money. I commented on her daughters' linens and she said, "Oh yeah, I got them at Neimann Marcus." Everything in her house was beautiful and fancy, the house is brand new and not even finished. She's SO not the type of person you'd think lives in a house like that. I was pleasantly surprised. I threw in a shirt for her son because I felt bad about having things for her girls but nothing for him...thought that was a nice touch.
Triplet mom said that she would host a party for me too, even though most of her friends are going on Friday night to the other one. We'll see. In any case, she said she'd order more stuff from me, which was nice. She also gave me 2 white cotton outfits of hers to dye so she can be more stylish. :-)
Tonight I did a holiday boutique at a local nursery school/temple. I sold 2 outfits and 1 shirt...not bad considering there were TWO other tie dye kid clothing booths and it wasn't a huge place. AND I was the last one from the entrance, so people had already browsed the other 2.
This week has been really profitable, I'm sure it's just a fluke. Just seems like everything's happening at once. I guess if you give your card out to enough people, things can happen. I'm putting almost $500 cash in the bank tomorrow and then we'll see what happens on Friday. I'm also doing a show in an orthodox synagogue on Sunday. I'm hesitant about it, but there's no fee and they only take 10% of what I make, so if it's a total loss, I can just leave whenever I want and not feel bad. I can't imagine too many orthodox kids walking around in funky dyed clothing, but maybe I'm generalizing. The woman has been pursuing me for a while, so she must think there's a market there for it. I'm kicking myself for not stocking more dresses. We'll see!
It's strange to me how all of a sudden people know who I am in relation to what I make. Strangers are saying to me, "Oh, YOU'RE the one who does all the tie dyeing!" I am embarrassed to admit that I really love this new identity. I've always made one thing or another, but never pursued anything this far. The fear of rejection was always too great.
A woman (repeat customer actually) came to pick up an embroidered fleece baby blanket today that she ordered on Monday and I told her that I was finishing up those overalls because I wanted them to be perfect. She said, "Everything you make is perfect." Talk about a great compliment!
Ok, that's it for shop talk. You're bored if you've read this far. I just want to document this for when I'm miserable and nobody wants anything I make and I feel like a total failure. Yeah, bound to happen sooner or later.
