I lost touch with my junior high and high school best friend soon after my father died in 95. We drifted far apart, she was doing very self-destructive things and I was too maternal...and then she wasn't there for me at all when my dad died.
I called her a few times over the years because I can't let anyone go, but I gave up about ten years ago.
Then I got a myspace account and looked her up about a year ago. And there she was.
We've been in scattered email contact since then. She still lives in NYC and is still single, still drinking and smoking, but she seems happy and healthy. I doubt she's doing the hard drugs she was doing years ago.
I was planning on taking Lily in the the city Thursday, just me and her, so I emailed Jackie and asked if she'd be interested in meeting for a cup of coffee. I pretty much figured she'd say no, but I got this email a little while ago:
Hey Jen,
Sorry for the tardy response. Thurs would be great. Let me know what time your planning to be in and we'll figure it out from there.
Looking forward to it...
Jackie
I'm so excited. I'm a dork like that. The only glitch is that now Robert is planning on coming too, so I'm going to try and find a way to ditch him somewhere for an hour or so just so I can meet her with just Lily. There's a chance Laszlo's coming too, so maybe the boys can go do something boyish and Lily and I will meet Jackie.
I haven't seen her in probably 13 years, although we've seen pictures of each other online. She was drop dead gorgeous when we were in high school, but totally faded in college because she was routinely overdosing on drugs. She's regained a lot of her beauty. I'm so looking forward to seeing her, but I'm soooo nervous too. She's one of those super hip people, worked for Vogue magazine and then bartended at some super funky places in the city. And I got married and had kids. Not that I would trade in a gazillion years, but I don't want to appear like a faggy momma in contrast to her total fashionista.
