Robert left our garage door open last night, and there's the telltale smell of cat urine in there. I can't find it. Is there a normal type of place cats like to pee? Like do they pee in corners? On soft stuff? High up?

It probably depends on whether it was just relieving itself or marking territory. The latter is likely to be pretty much anywhere.

And what if it's the former?

If it's just general use, then in quiet corners or under things. When Spider was a kitten he decided that under a particular piece of furniture was his favourite toilet. We left a large sheet of foil under there which deterred him.

If it's really stinky, it's probably a cat marking its territory. IME, smells much worse. Look low, someplace easily accessed. When they know they're doing this in someone else's territory, they tend to squirt and run.

I wish I had some guaranteed remedies for the smell.
Things that did not work for me:
Baking soda solution
Vinegar
Diluted bleach
Spic and Span
Glass cleaner (ammonia)
Simple Green
Laundry detergent
Dawn dish soap

Of course, we have had repeated applications of cat piss for years. The strays used to all gather in our yard to fight even before we moved to this house.

The above was from me. Sorry!

I have that, but I don't know WHERE the cat peed.

We've had cats come in and mark the laundry room (it's off the porch) when we've left the door open. Usually they spray the walls. I just get a big thing of enzyme cleaner (Walmart, Target, pet stores - but it HAS to be enzyme cleaner, nothing else will get the smell out) and douse liberally. Basically just go around sniffing everything, with cleaner in hand :)

Aha! I'll try this. Thank you, T.

Yeah, none of our current cats pee on things (and a damned good thing for them, too) but one of my former cats in NY was kind of a bitch and would pee on things in fits of pique :P So I learned well that nothing REALLY does the job (well enough to keep them from smelling it and marking again) like enzyme stuff.

Ugh, the spray will be right at dinky level, you can find it in the dark with a blacklight. Otherwise, look for canvas or other cloths on the floor, especially corners.
