ATTN: Sewers (ha, people who sew, not sewers!)

I'm planning on getting back into sewing...I'm really only good at making straight lines. How vital is a serger? I want to be able to tailor existing clothing.

I'm very tempted to get one.

I was taught (at school and by my grandmother, a former professional seamstress) to use a short and wide zigzag stitch for the edges. Its always worked fine for me. I don't have an overlocker (serger), but I do have an overlock stitch on my sewing machine, but I find myself still using the zigzag.
