This morning I had the pleasure of stepping barefoot in nice, warm dog poo.

I said, "Dammit!"

Laszlo: Dammit! Ha. What happened Mommy?

Me: I stepped in dog doodie. Ew!

Laszlo: (uncontrollable laughter)

Me: I really should stop saying "dammit" around you guys, it's a bad word.

Laszlo: Dammit's a bad word?

Me: Yes. You shouldn't say it at school. (I know, I know...what can I do?)

Laszlo: I can say it at school.

Me: No, you really shouldn't.

Laszlo: I can say that though.

Me: What?

Laszlo: I can say, "Dammit's a bad word."

Also, yesterday we were trying to figure out what to do. Laszlo decided it would be a perfect day to spend some of the money he's been earning from behaving properly at school.

Me: You have to decide what kind of store you want to go to.

Laszlo: What do you mean?

Me: Well, we can go to a toy store, an electronics store, a book store...

Laszlo: What's an "electronic store"? Is that a store that runs on batteries? (Mr. Literal)

Me: Ha, nope, it's a store that sells electronic stuff, like iPods, computers, etc.

Laszlo: (pensive)

Lily: I know! We can just go to Target! They have all that stuff......AND Pet Shop Animals!

That's my girl. You know we ended up at Target.

Yeah, Gabe just got in trouble at school for this. Apparently he was frustrated at his computer and said, "Damn this computer!" And then, he says, everyone gasped. Great, you think with that reaction, he won't be trying it again?

My problem is that as words go, I think 'damn' isn't particularly offensive. I obviously use it because Kit decided he could use it in the same context after we'd had the discussion about Words That Must Not Be Said (as much because other people didn't like them as any personal objection).

Anyway, it's not good to use up all the best swear words on trivial matters, save them for important disasters.

Oh, neither do I. I don't actually have a big problem with most swear words, and ones that don't even have a sexual implication are particularly unexciting to me - I am far more likely to get worked up over language that is unkind to others. (Gabe has confused other kids by saying they said the s-word - referring to the word "stupid.") But the salient point is that he will get in trouble using it at school, so there it is.

I think I'll have to teach him a lot of archaic exclamations.
