I cooked cream of wheat in a stainless steel pot yesterday. The bottom burned a little bit (which resulted in the wheat tasting like toasted marshmallows!) I soaked it, and then put it through the dishwasher.

It still has a thin coat of brown muck on the bottom and I can't even scrape off. Are there any magic remedies for this?

Put dishwasher detergent in it, perferrably powdered, and put it back on to boil, then simmer. It will stink but it usually works.

Seconding the dishwasher detergent with a little water, but I usually just soak mine like that over night and wipe it clean in the morning.

Thirding. Either way has worked for me. Or a fabric softener sheet soaked in it. It breaks down the protein that is bonded to the pan (/geek)

Soak in hot water with cleaning soda. Which is different from baking soda and very much NOT edible.
