Is Laszlo a smartie?
Oct. 11th, 2005 09:50 pmRobert was downstairs with the kids while I was cleaning something or other upstairs. We're talking maybe 5 minutes. I came downstairs and Robert said, "Laszlo, let's show Mommy how you know opposites." He went on to ask Laszlo things like, "The opposite of light is?" and then he would say, "dark" - all by himself. He did it with light/dark, in/out, chocolate/vanilla, boy/girl, up/down, high/low, fast/slow and a whole bunch of others that I can't recall at the moment. He's just over 3 and a half.
I called my sister in law who is a teacher just to ask her if I'm crazy to think that this was really smart. She said that they *start* to teach opposites in kindergarten (which Laszlo is almost 2 years away from) and that they need to use visual cues with the kids to get them to grasp it. She said that first grade is when they "get" the concept the way Laszlo was tonight.
I know he has a great memory and things like that, but this was just watching his brain work to figure out the concept of opposites. It wasn't memorization, it was logic. I was impressed.
Just had to share.
